i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, january 29th. a new twist in the allegations at a high school in vallejo. janine de la vega is live to explain why police are now getting involved in the case and the questions they still need answered. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we've learned that in the inside of the locker room is the coach's office. so the big question is was he even present? was he anywhere near that locker room when the alleged assaults happened? is he the only one that could be liable for what happened here? these are questions that police will be looking into. police only learned about what happened here last thursday. they will be interviewing students and officials at st. patrick's st. vincent's as well as officials in the archdiocese.

the allegations involve attacks on six students. friday, the principal fired the varsity coach about five weeks after he reported the sexual hazing allegations to her. we have a photo of him from when he worked in the saratoga schools. he's a former police officer who played college football and started here last august. now, the coach says some freshmen football players admitted to him that thursday in the locker room, some varsity players would remove their clothing. there's been backlash against the principal about why the assistant was not fired as well. but then it was determined that the individual changed their mind about that individual. as far as getting any comment about the school, all staff has been advised not to speak to reporters. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel

2 news. >> thank you, tara. 7:03. we've been excited about the super bowl for days now. but what's known as super bowl week officially begins in just about an hour with media day. the ravens arrived in the big easy yesterday afternoon, walking off the plane in some nice suits and ties. 49ers got to new orleans on sunday. today at the superdome thousands of media members will be talking to niners and ravens' players. and for the second time in history, fans are being allowed in the superdome to watch. 7:03. a woman in hayward said she is the victim of a super bowl ticket scam. she says she and her boyfriend went on craigslist and bought what they thought were four tickets for $5900. the seller claimed to be a baltimore ravens' season ticketholder. after e-mailing, texting and talking on the phone with the man, she wired that $5900. well, the package aive rooked yesterday but the only --

arrived yesterday but the only thing inside was a picture and a message that read "enjoy the game. go ravens! lol! the woman has not reported the crime yet and still plans to go to the super bowl. the american beverage association is responding to mayor lee asking their liquor to be limited during the super bowl. lee suggested that the bar serve something other than hard alcohol during celebrations like 49er touches. mayor lee's spokesperson size the mayor said fans will celebrate -- said he just hopes fans will celebrate responsibility. coming up, ken wayne will give us a live report from new orleans. ken and the rest of our crew will have live reports in every newscast leading up to super bowl. on sunday night, after the big

game, make sure you switch to channel 2 for a live local postgame show for the fans in the bay area and in new orleans. this morning, president obama is traveling to las vegas where he will lay out his proposals for comprehensive immigration reform. a bipartisan group of senators unveiled their plan for immigration reform yesterday on capitol hill. coming up at 7:15, the key difference between the president's approach to immigration reform and the senator's plan. tonight, there is a public hearing on plans to improve the greenbrae interchange in marin county. caltrans wants to demolish a pedestrian overcrossing on the 1011 and replace it with an -- 101 and replace it with an elevated freeway. transportation official says the $143 million project will improve safety and reduce congestion. opponents say the project costs too much money. tonight's meeting starts at the redwood high school cafeteria

in larkspur. hey, sal, what's the latest on that crash in hayward. >> they just moved it out of the lanes. 880 southbound at highway 92. this crash was in the lanes for a while. this is the second crash in this area this morning. we had an earlier one northbound. traffic is still very slow. this is the time when it gets busy heading down to highway 92. we don't need any help with crashes. northbound 101 at the 92 interchange or just north of it, they just cleared a motorcycle crash. no one was seriously injured. i would still use 280 as an alternate route driving northbound up the peninsula, 280 is better than 101. let's go to the bay bridge -- or 24 first and then the bay bridge. on 24, between walnut creek and oakland, it's about a 12 to 20- minute drive depending upon when you get on the road. no more than 20 minutes. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, that's about a 20- minute delay before you make it to the metering lights. 7:07. let's go to steve. the low of high clouds over

us -- a lot of high clouds over us. that's ice crystals with high clouds. they are up there 15,000, 20,000 feet. the cloud cover will thin out later. this will give us a cloudy to mostly cloudy morning. temperatures in the 30s, 40s to near 50. rather breezy to wind dip especially along the coast. mostly cloudy. it's a north wind. mostly sunny this afternoon. partly sunny. a little breezy at times. these higher clouds and also the system dropping down did produce a few light snowshowers up towards the sierra nevada. most of those look like they are long gone. one line of thunderstorms very severe through oklahoma city. tornado warnings out here on the back side of that, freezing rain and snow. that's the forecast for oklahoma city. all in one lane. severe weather, then turning snow by tonight. if you are heading to new orleans, that system move --

turning cloudy late sunday into monday. 7:09. an oakland woman has been arrested. she's accused of stealing credit cards from seven naval hospitals by -- from seven naval hospitals by pretending -- from seven naval hospitals -- northern california hospitals. she's accused of stealing from walnut creek, daly city and santa cruz. reportedly she's only accused of stealing credit cards from shop employees not from patients -- from hospital employees not from patients. the pentagon wants to hire computer experts and cyber experts. washington has been warning about a spike in cyber attacks. they are encouraging college students to pursue careers in

good morning. we're tracking breaking news of a car smashing into a building in san francisco. ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores is live at 9th. brian, what happened? is anyone hurt? >> from what we understand, sal, three people were taken to the hospital at this point.

it's unknown injuries. go ahead and take a lookant the damage to this pickup truck right here. this is a ford explorer sport track, you can see extensive damage here. as you mentioned, we're on 9th and brannan. this truck, from what we hear from witnesses, was traveling at a high rate of speed. it slammed into another tow truck and from what we understand there's a lot of damage to that tow truck as well. but again, there's three people that have been injured so far. if we take a look at the scene, newschopper2 is up ahead as well. brannan headed northbound is currently closed right now. so if you are heading towards 9th and brannan near the pier 1, currently closed right now, but according to police, they will be opening it up soon. the pickup truck was traveling at high rate of speed, slammed into a meter post and made a

little bit of damage to the building but not enough to where it was significant damage. 9th and brannan, northbound brannan is closed for the time being. officials say it will be open in -- very soon. the drivers from what we understand from investigators as well had to be taken out with the jaws of life. as you can see as we're going back to the truck, very extensive damage. still unclear whether alcohol or speed played an impact on this. witnesses say that one of these vehicles was traveling at a high rate of speed. but as soon as we have more information, we'll definitely pass that along. we're live here in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. it is 7:14. new this morning, two people have been killed in a suicide bombing outside of the presidential palace in the capital of somalia. authorities say the attacker detonated explosives while being questioned by soldiers at a checkpoint. two soldiers died. three others were wounded.

somalia's president was out of the country at the time of the attack. the u.s. has reached an agreement with the west african country of that jeer. najir. this comes after they were able to retake the city of timbuktu which was under control of islamist militants since last april. before they left the city, they destroyed several world heritage sites and burned down a building that contained manuscripts. about 30 minutes ago, president obama through out of washington, d.c. to take his immigration reform message on the road. the president's plan could go off course from what was unveiled yesterday. kyla cam bem has more. >> reporter: the president's message are likely to be more liberal, likely pushing off the

requirement of securing our borders and speeding up the process for 11 illegal immigrants to obtain residency. he's not proposing new legislation in nevada but he will lay out his own vision for immigration report. his ideas are expected to overlap. both democrats and republican senators want to increase border security and create a path to citizenship. they also want to create fair employment opportunities that will boost our economy. >> i have a masters in nursing. i still cannot practice in my profession because i'm undocumented. i wouldn't be taking any job, i would be providing a job that's in high demand. >> reporter: while republican senators helped create the framework for the latest immigration, some members of the gop are not happy with it. and what they are saying, when

i see you next. here in the bay area, some are excited about true immigration reform. in the canal district many immigrants say they hope it leads to a path to citizenship. many here say allowing people to legalize their status is better for everyone. >> little by little, everyone benefits. they will benefit, the country will benefit. >> in california, illegal immigrants make up almost 7% of the population. supporters of immigration reform in california are holding public viewings of president obama's speech. here in the bay area there will be public viewing at our lady of guadalupe church at 2020 east san antonio street. that begins at 11:55 a.m. 7:17. in just two hours, the young woman accused in last month's deadly car crash on san francisco's twin peaks is due back in court. 23-year-old gina eunice is expected to learn the date for

her preliminary hearing. she's charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and hit-and-run. prosecutors say she had a blood alcohol level way above the legal limit when she killed two people. two others were injured. police are trying to fifth out why a doctor was killed outside his office in newport beach. the man suspected of pulling the trigger was still in the room and is still in custody. authorities think he was a patient but are still searching for a motive. we're getting new information about the shooting last week where an oakland police officer was wounded. a veteran undercover officer was shot in the arm during a stake out in east oakland. court documents reveal the officer struggled for control of his gun with three men before they shot him and the gunman didn't believe or maybe didn't even care that he was a

police officer. police later arrested two of the suspects. the third one is still out there on the loose. an 8-year-old girl has become the latest innocent victim of oakland's growing street violence. a bullet hit her in the leg at a drive-by shooting just yesterday. coming up at 7:22. alex savidge is in oakland. he will tell us what's exact happening -- what's happening today about this rise in crime. a purr watchdog is trying to keep your -- a consumer watchdog is trying to keep your rates from going up. back in december, the state approved pg&e's request to raise its natural gas rates to help finance upgrades to the system following the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. but the group says customers should not have to pay for pg&e's mistakes. 7:20. i think you are still gonna need a coat this morning. it's another cloudy, chilly

supreme court justice sonia sotomayor was here in the bay area and told a san francisco audience about her journey to the high court. sonia sotomayor is the first latina and the third woman on the u.s. supreme court. she said she couldn't answer questions about her views on same-sex marriage since those issues are before the high court. however, she then went on to say it was affirmative action

that helped get her first into princeton and then into harvard. >> yes, i needed help. but once i got there, i worked at it and i proved myself worthy. >> now, justice sotomayor signed copies of her book which is about her experience growing up, including her father's death from alcoholism when sheep was only 9 years old and the diabetes that she thought would take her life as a child. the u.s. treasury department is being criticized for approving what's being called excessive salaries. according to a government report, the treasury approved pay raises for 18 executive its at american international group or aig, general motors and allied financial. most of those salary hike requests were for $100,000 or more. the report says the treasury ignored its own rules limiting

we're tracking a police investigation after a truck plowed into a building in san francisco. ktvu channel 2 reporter brian

flores is live at 9th and brannan. brian, has the road reopened there? >> reporter: hia, sal. probably about five or ten minutes ago. a couple of lanes on brannan have just opened up. take a look at this. this was one of the trucks that was involved in this accident earlier this morning. you can see the extensive damage to it. right now, especially on the the driver's side you can see the driver's air bag was tee employed as well. but just extensive damage at least here on this pickup truck. this was a ford explorer sport track. from what we understand, still piecing together what happened. but from what we do know, we understand a pickup truck or tow truck may have been traveling at a high rate of speed. one of the vehicles crashed into the other. the truck you just saw crashed into the side of a building about 100 yards away. the tow truck crashed into a, parking meter -- into a parking meter.

but it doesn't appear to have caused damage to the buildings. as for the drivers, we understand they were slightly injured this morning and they were taken to the hospital and they had to be taken out from the jaws of life. as we take it back out here live, this truck is gonna be towed out of the building. but extensive damage. we don't know the extent of the damage or the injuries to the drivers. but they were taken to the hospital, at least three people were taken to the hospital. brannan, a couple of lanes are now open on 9th and brannan. if we have more information, we'll pass it along to you. we're live in san francisco south of market, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we'll check back for an update. thank you, brian. super bowl week officially kicks off today with media day. ktvu's anchor ken wayne is live at the superdome where fans will be watching.

live in new orleans, ken wayne, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, ken. at ktvu.com, we have a section dedicated to the 49ers and the quest for six. 7:33. well, the parents of a man shot and killed by police in walnut creek by police last month are suing the police department. the family of anthony ban ta, junior is -- banta, junior is filing a $15 million lawsuit. they say he charged at police with a knife after fighting. the family says the fight was already over with his roommate when the police arrived and one of the officers reacted in panic after an officer tripped and fell behind him. weapons experts will show lawmakers the types of weapons that are legal and illegal under california law today. there will be an examination of

california's assault weapons band which took effect in 1989 after a school shooting in stockton. testimony will be given by police, researchers, advocates who oppose gun violence and also gun rights groups. this morning an 8-year-old girl is still in an oakland police after becoming the latest innocentim have of street violence. ktvu's alex savidge is here. he just got brand-new information about that shooting. what do you know, alex? >> reporter: well, i got an e- mail from a department spokeswoman this morning. she told me so far there have been no arrests in connection with that drive-by shooting yesterday that rest the 8 -- that left the 8-year-old girl wounded. she also told me that little girl is doing well. she suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and is expected to survive. she was released from -- she will be released from the hospital later on today. now, that little girl was playing outside of a relative's house when several gunmen drove by and opened fire. this all happened just before 2:30 near 63rd avenue.

police say the child, the only person hit in this shooting, an innocent victim of gun violence. police don't have a solid description on the shooters they are looking for. ktvu was able to talk with the girl's grandmother who asked that we not show her face or reveal her identity. she was certainly angered by what happened. >> this doesn't make any sense. you just shot an innocent child. and i know sent child -- an innocent child. just playing by herself. you seen her. why would you do that? >> reporter: and this is the latest in the series of troubling crimes in oakland. just last week, two oakland police officers were wounded in the line of duty. in one case, a veteran police officer was shot in the arm during a stakeout. now we're getting new information about the shooting. court documents reveal the officer in that case struggled for control of his gun with three men before they ended up shooting him. and apparently, according to those court documents, the gunman didn't believe or maybe didn't care that he was a

homeless guide and go through training on how to do the homeless count. these teams were paired up and went through cars sand some of them walked the streets and searched areas where the homeless hang out. the last time a count was done was more than two years ago. local officials want to see if that number has grown. this will help the city and county qualify for over $10 million in federal grant money. it will help them assess the efficiency and to plan for resources in the future. we spoke with one homeless man, who volunteered why he wanted to volunteer -- who shared why he wanted to volunteer. >> i don't plant be to be -- plan to be homeless for very long. as i am now, i could be helping my friends. >> reporter: so you are glad the county is doing this -- >> absolutely. absolutely. >> reporter: several times last year, the city brought in crews

just within the last hour, a measure of u.s. consumer confidence plunges in january to its lowest level since november 2011. good news, u.s. home prices accelerated in november. phoenix saw the biggest gain followed by san francisco. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is down 28. the nasdaq is down 14. s&p down 1. in just a few minutes, federal reserve chairman ben bernanke and his colleagues start a two-day policy meeting to discuss possible changes to a key federal interest rate any time in the next six weeks. bernanke will announce the decision late tomorrow morning.

most experts expect the open- ended policy to stay in plate. we just checked. yahoo!'s stock is up. the company posted higher-than- expected revenue. they hit the four-year high and had the highest year since 2008. some analysts are still concerned because they continue to lag behind competitors in internet ad sales. another local company making a lot of news this morning is apple. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom now with the details. pam? >> well, this morning, apple announced another ipad. it's still an ipad 4, basically, not the mini, but the new one will have twice as much memory, 128 gigabytes rather than 64. it goes on sale next tuesday, february 5th. $799 for the wi-fi version. $929 with both wi-fi and

cellular network. apple has sold more than $120 million of its tablets so far. more talk this morning and more details about a cheaper iphone this morning. there are reports from i-lounge and the wall street that say it looks like the iphone 5 will take cues from the iphone touch and the classic. but it will switch to a plastic body. the site says reliable sources have told them this morning. there have been a lot of reports for a while. apple's senior marketing vice president recently said apple will not develop cheap smartphones in order to grab market share. apple also once again the most valuable company in the ground did lose when the shares dropped. right now the stock is up did the 64. after announcing the iphone -- is up $664.

after i announcing the iphone, the analysts say it's not considered a growth stock but apple has the most loyal customer base around the world. back to you. the ceo of tesla is offering to help boeing. he is talking with the executives of the dreamliners. those planes were grounded earlier after battery fires. the experiences with similar lithium batteries may be helpful to boeing. so far, no comment from boeing. a survivor of the nightclub fire in brazil says people closest to the stage where the fire started actually had a better chance of getting out because they could see what was going on. meanwhile, investigators say the nightclub had no fire arm,

private corporations that have already completely recognized that the gay community is a very valuable source of talent and cannot be discriminated against. >> well, next week the board is due to talk about each of the 116,000 individual boy scout troops to set their own policies on gay membership but that's getting criticism from both sides of the discussion. it is 7:49. former san francisco 49er and oakland raider kwame harris is scheduled to go to trial in april on charges of assault on a former boyfriend. he was arrested in august of last year after an incident outside a restaurant in menlo park. he got mad when guire tried to put so sauce on harris's rice. he also accuses his ex- boyfriend of steal -- of stealing his underwear. harris has pleaded not guilty.

the santa clara city council meets tonight to discuss the new billion-dollar home for the 49ers. two santa clara police officers and one former officer are in new orleans this week and they will learn all about the incredible security measures surrounding the biggest sporting event in america. >> it's very important to the city to make sure that this thing is run in a safe manner and we feel that you can't extend enough resources to make sure that's true. >> santa clara first have first- hand knowledge at security problems at a professional sporting event. they responded to a melee at a game. they know the crowds at 49er games will be much bigger. a company in minnesota is already making merchandise for this year's super bowl clam pea up. wincraft is -- championship.

welcome back. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. a hazing scandal at a vallejo high school is now becoming a much bigger investigation this morning. ktvu's tara moriarty is at st. patrick's st. vincent high school to tell us why the police are getting involved and the questions they want answered. tara? >> reporter: had there been a trace disof this, had this been going on before the head coach arrived. these are questions that police will be looking into. police officers only found out about the scandal last

thursday. they will be interviewing students and officials here and they could decide whether to press charges against the five students expelled last week. they are accused offing withing six students in the locker room as part of a sexual hazing ritual on thursdays before game day. last week, the principal hired the varsity coach after he reported the allegations to her. we have a photo of him. he's a former new york police officer who played college football and then started as a coach and teacher here last august. now, he says some freshmen football players reluctantly admitted to him that some varsity players had removed their clothes and assaulted them. not everyone is on board with the principal's decision. many say the coach did what he was supposed to do and they are criticizes the principal asking why an assistant coach who also reportedly now of the investigation and said it's not

my problem was not fired as well. the diocese is saying the student who accused of assistant coach later changed his mine when he spoke to ryan about it. some say that sounds fishy. well, his lawyer has advised the coach not to comment due to a potential lawsuit over his firing. another bay area coach said he did not get a fair shake here. but ryan said there was a lack of supervision which leads some to believe that the coach must not have been present in the locker room when the hazing occurred. we put in a call to police. as far as getting comment from the school, all staff has been advised not to speak to reporters. back to you. >> 8:1. chevron has paid $10 million in medical claims from the richmond refinery fire last year. most of the money has gone to the hospitals paying for treatment for thousands of people. the company says it's

avenue in hayward. the boy's relative in a wheel chair was trapped inside. two neighbors were able to pull the man to safety. he was rushed to the hospital, treated for burns. firefighters say a burning cigarette tarted -- started that fire. we're learning more about the tragic fire in foster city that we told you about yesterday at 4:30. the chp has identified the driver at 21-year-old juan fernandez. he was driving eastbound on highway 92 when he lost control of the car. the car slammed into a guardrail and flipped over several times. hernandez and two brothers, ages 12 and 16, were killed in the crash. a third brother was critically hurt. >> i want to be the strong pillar for my mom and my dad. >> the chp says there's no sign that drugs or alcohol were involved in this crash.

welcome back. the wait has gotten longer for the trial of the five men accused in the deadly 911 attacks. yesterday was a very emotional day in court. the families of 911 victims went to the preliminary hearings at the u.s. naval base in guantanamo bay bay. khalid sheik mohhamed is the accused mastermind behind the

911 attacks that killed almost 3,000 people. >> it was very emotion ale -- emotional being in court. >> one of the suspects wants new legal counsel. the trial is not expected to begin for at least another year. the state department is reassigning the man in charge of closing the prison at guantanamo bay. and there are no plans to replace him either. officials say daniel free's work will be taken over by a legal advisory office. legal analysts say that's a sign the obama administration doesn't see the closing of the prison as a top priority. he will be the coordinator for a sanctions policy and working on issues including iran and syria. right now, president obama is on air force one heading to nevada where he will push his

8:18. colleges nationwide are gearing up for a boom in the drone- flying industry. while most of the jobs are military-related right now, universities and colleges expect that to change by 2015. that's when the federal aviation administration is due to release regulations for unmanned aircraft in domestic space. this comes as more and more law enforcement agencies show interest in drones, including the alameda county sheriff's office. that's why more schools are starting to offer degrees in that industry. right now, 14 colleges have permits from the faa to fly the drones. a woman accused of killing a man by shoving him off a new york city platform, she's do you in court this morning. erica me anyone dez is scheduled to be formally charged for murder in a suspected hate crime a month ago. prosecutors say she pushed a 46- year-old man in front of a train because she mistakenly thought he was a muslim. a judge recently ruled she's

rand 8-year-old girl has become the latest victim in gun violence. oakland's police chief will talk about the crime problem that starts in just a couple of hours. alex savidge has more. >> reporter: later on this morning, the chief will address a series of troubling shootings in this city. two police officers shot last week and yesterday a drive-by shooting that left an 8-year- old girl wounded. a department spokesperson said that little girl is doing well. she suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and is expected to fully recover. the girl was playing outside a relative's house when several gunmen drove by and opened fire yesterday afternoon about 2:30. this was near 65th avenue. police say the child was the only person hit there, an innocent victim of gun violence. so far, no arrests in the shooting. ktvu talked with the girl's grandmother who asked that we not show her face or reveal her identity. she told us the shooters were heartless. >> they knew that it was a

child. you know, there's kids going around killing kids. why? you know, i just pray, you know, i know god is the solution. >> reporter: the shooting of that little girl comes a week after two oakland police officers were wounded in the line of duty. in one of those cases it was an undercover police officer shot in the arm in -- in a stakeout expected to fully recover. we're getting more information about that particular shooting. the court documents show the officer struggled for control of his gun with three men before they eventually shot him. now, later on this morning, at 11:15, howard jordan will be holding a news conference to talk about both of those shootings that wounded two of his officers. the investigations that are coming about there. he's also expected to update the investigation and the search for shooters in connection with yesterday's drive-by shooting that left that 8-year-old girl wounded. live this morning in oakland,

wrong place for his victims. the fbi is out there digging by hand at an abandoned well in the san joaquin county community. last year wesley shermantine led investigators to a well where the remains of four women were found. but now he says the well where the fbi is digging right now is not one of the burial spots. however, the fbi says shermantine has been wrong before. in berkeley, a man is accused of trying to steal bear from a berkeley grocery store, three times in one day. it happened last monday at the berkeley bowl on oregon street. the daily cal reports that loss prevention officers stopped christopher litke the first time. he managed to get away. second time he did manage to get away with beer but he still came back a third -- a third time. loss prevention was able to hold him until police arrived. we're hearing about another

state agency milds millions of dollars from the state treasury -- hiding millions of dollars from the state treasury. calfire hid $3.6 million from legal settlements rather than depositing it into the state's general fund as requested. the paper says calfire used the cash for equipment, purchases and training. reportedly, the state department of finance is now planning an investigation. california could have an updated and expanded early- warning earthquake system if some state you lamakers get their way. alex padilla of los angeles is sponsoring a bill to spend $80 million on in had the of had the ground sensors -- on in had the of had the ground sensors -- on in the ground sensors. the timing could be a few seconds, mine one minute. that could be enough time to take cover. >> sure. >> to try to reduce damage.

developing news in hayward. a house fire on the 1300 block of russell in hayward. everyone out of the house is safely. except for a pet. the fire department was looking inside for a pet. you can see newschopper showing the holes firefighters had to make in the roof to allow the smoke to escape. this is on the 1300 block of russell. it was a one-alarm response. no people were hurt. they are still looking for a family pet and the street is blocked. it looks like all of the fire is out. let's go back to the desk. stocks edging higher on wall street, pushing the dow towards 14,000 as investors digest the latest rounds of earnings. right now the dow is up at 13,938. the nasdaq is flat and s&p is up 4. zynga's stock is falling after an unexpected 14% increase yesterday. right now it's currently down almost 6%. analysts say there was no real

reason for the runup by the san francisco company that makes mauve yowar games and farmville -- mafia war fames and farmville. apple is one of the stocks to watch this morning as it regains its spot as the most valuable company. pam cook is in our newsroom to tell us why. pam? >> yeah, apple's stock up again today and so is its market cap which means it's, once again, the most valuable company in the world. now, on friday, shares dropped to almost 15%. as one analyst puts it, even though apple's value dropped about $45 billion, it's still roughly three times the size of nobody kia's market cap. market cap, in case you didn't nope, is the share price times the number of shares outstanding. right now. i'm keeping an eye on apple. it's up about $9 a share this morning or 2%. now, part of the reason it is getting a boost this morning on news of another ipad, still an

ipad 4, but the new one will have twice as much memory. 128 gigabytes, rather than 64. it goes on sale next tuesday, february 5th. $799 for the wi-fi version. $929 for the model that has wi- fi and cellular access. analysts kind of lukewarm on this news, though. there's also more talk about a cheaper iphone this morning in new details. many reports indicate it could come out this year. some say it will be a combin names of the look of the iphone 5 and the latest touch. it will have a plastic body. no announcement from apple on that. but the senior vice president recently said apple will not develop develop cheap smart phones. in terms of market share to give you an idea, samsung, the operating system which is mostly samsung has about 70%

worldwide. while apple, pretty pop pure lar here in the united states, worldwide, the ios operating system only about 20% market share. reporting live in the newsroom, let's go back to tori and dave. 8:48. let's bring you up to date on some of the other top stories we're following for you right now. in san francisco, three people were rushed to the hospital after a truck, that truck, crashed into a building just hours ago. this all happened at 9th and brannan. the authorities say it appears a pickup driver hit a tow truck and crashed into the building. speed may have been a factor. police are involved in sexual hazing at st. patrick's high school. volunteers are fanning out across the south bay counting the homeless. ktvu's janine de la vega is live in san jose right now and tells us this count is crucial to getting federal funding,

janine? >> reporter: dave, we've been trailing a team of volunteers you can see them right here as they are looking at their map, figuring out where they are gonna go next. they've taken us here to a spot near coyote creek. there is an encarmment below -- encampment below. earlier this morning, volunteers met to get matched up with a homeless guide to go through training how to do a homeless count. the teams go through cars and walk the streets and search areas where the homeless hang out. more than 7,000 homeless people were counted in the county. local officials want to see if that number has grown. now, this will help the city and the county qualify for over $10 million in federal grant money. it will help leaders assess the efficiency of current programs to help the homeless and to plan for resources in the future. we spoke to one homeless man and he shared why he decided it was important to volunteer.

>> it's definitely cold outside. if we had the money, the funding, to keep keep people off the street, i know people lose their jobs, and this will help them get back. without no funding, we're out there, we're stealing. we don't like to do that. i want to be able to work in society. >> the county says one of the biggest problems in the south bay is having enough affordable housing. they do have $1.5 million earmarked for housing subsidies for the chronically homeless in the county. but the long-term goal is to get them permanently off streets if they are willing to accept the help. back out here live again, you can see one of the community volunteers with two of the homeless guides. those homeless guides are getting paid $10 an hour. that was a good motivator for them to come out here. they also told me they did want to help do this homeless count. in the next several weeks, they will be coming out to do a

survey, actually talking to the people living down here in the encampments finding out how long they have been homeless and this homeless count will be happening -- will be happening tomorrow. back to you. >> thank you. an oakland woman has been arrested and accused of stealing credit cards from seven northern california hospitals by pretending to be a doctor. yolanda smith was reportedly able to get into employee lunch areas simply by dressing in a white lab coat and wearing a stethoscope around her neck. smith is also accused of stealing credit cards from hospitals in daly city, walnut creek and santa cruz. reportedly, she's only accused of stealing credit cards from hospital employees and not patients. the pentagon wants to hire hundreds of computer hackers and cyber experts. the "washington post" reports the defense department has approved plans to expand its
